Encouraging interaction on directories such as Yelp, Citysearch and Google Places builds consumer confidence and offers new channels for potential clients to find your business. There are also a multitude of specific directories that cater to lawyers, doctors, dentists, contractors, restaurants and many more. These directories often rank well for keywords related to your business where at times your website won’t. Review sites can offer a business greater reach, more exposure, increased relevance on the search engines, leading to more customers. These properties display important business information such as a business’s address, phone number, website and email. Directories can put a business’s information in front of targeted consumers, looking to purchase a product or service.
Many of these sites encourage interaction between the business and the customer. Not only can consumers write reviews about the business in many cases, but the businesses can also respond to the consumer comments as well.

With the recent unveiling of Place Search, Google’s new local algorithm, it’s more important then ever to build out these profiles or “citations”. They help to increase your relevance in the eyes of the search engines, further promoting your organic listing on the search engine results pages.
The majority of these directories are free to join and cost nothing to maintain. In essence, it’s free advertising for your local business. There’s no reason not to be taking advantage of these dynamic web properties.
